Finding Out Which Microwave Popcorn Pops the Best the Easier Way

If the very thought of yummy movie- theatre popcorn suffuses you with a renewed zest for life, then you are sure to be gung-ho about the science project experiment that aims to determine which microwave popcorn pops the best. Interested? Forget kids that have an inscrutable affinity for this snack, even grown-ups would be upfront about conducting this experiment within the precincts of their home.

Cookware Sets

Light, butter, home style or kettle, they all manage to envelope us in euphoria, with consummate ease. And of course, financially astute customers never let go of an opportunity to get the best deal.

The Itch To Win Brownie Points

It's hard to torpedo the enthusiasm and never-say-die spirit of leading popcorn manufacturers when it comes to winning the plaudits of an entire generation of popcorn lovers. In fact, such is the hypnotic power of advertising that they manage to seize customers by an irresistible impulse to bite into their cauldron of delectable varieties.

The following experiment seeks to challenge the insularity of the public with respect to the best brands. Remember, the most widely used brands do not always give consistent results.

The Line-Up Includes...

Here's what you'll need to start your experiment with:

A bag each of Acme, Best Brand, Xtreme and Top-Dog microwave popcorn. A 500 watt microwave oven A large plastic bowl One small plastic bowl
Let's Get Started

Once all the materials are in place, it's time to set the ball rolling. Here's how:

Remove the bag of the first brand out of its packaging. Place the bag in the microwave and cook the same for a maximum of three minutes on high power. Make sure you read the instructions on the bag carefully. Wait for 30 seconds, thus allowing all the steam to escape. Open the bag carefully. Empty the contents into a large bowl. Separate all the unpopped kernels from the popped popcorn in a smaller bowl. Count the number of unpopped kernels and record your findings on a sheet. Now repeat the same process for all the remaining brands.

How to Cook Tri Tip in Your Oven Like an Expert

If you've got any of my other cooking articles here, you know I'm somewhat of a tri tip expert. I love it. Normally, I do mine on the grill, but there are times (especially when I'm busy) where I'll cook it in the oven. And you know what? It still tastes great. Here's how I do it.

Cookware Sets

First of all, you need to rub / marinade your meat however you like it. There's no perfect way. I've done tri tips all kinds of ways-it's the cut of meat I use when I experiment. However, you're going to want some wet works for the cooking. This could be a mixture of olive oil and other ingredients or your preferred marinade.

Cookware Sets

If your meat is in the refrigerator, take it out for about 5-10 minutes before cooking.

Heat up your oven to about 425 degrees F. Make note that cooking times and temperatures can vary from oven to oven.

Next, place your tri tip on a baking pan fat side down. Drench a little of your preferred wet works over it and slide it in the middle of your oven. Set your timer for about 45 minutes. Your cooking time might be about 1 hour, but from about the 45 minute mark, you want to pay real close attention to the meat.

Here's the key. Every 8-10 minutes, add some more marinade over the top of your tri tip. You may end up doing this 6-7 times depending on final cooking time. Remember to take it out before it's actually done, because it will continue to cook for up to 10 minutes afterward. And I like to wrap mine in foil for 5 minutes before cutting it.

Lastly, if your cut of meat has a fair amount of fat on the fat side, start it in the oven with that side up for about 8 minutes and then flip it for the rest of the duration. If you've done everything right, your tri tip from your oven will be very tasty.

Affordable Halloween Recipes - Scary Food Ideas Using Tuna

Creepy food is always part of a Halloween feast and no matter how simple they come, they add color to the occasion. You may be preparing for a Halloween festivity or a simple get-together fun; a little creativity can turn even your most standard meals into creepy Halloween treats. Here are some ways to transform something ordinary to something extraordinary, using tuna.

Cookware Sets

Tuna Brain Salad

Cookware Sets

Make two cups of tuna and mayo mixture the way you usually do it, but add more mayo or cream to make it appear creamy. Set aside. Prepare a cup of "clear or colorless" gelatin according to the package instructions then stir the cooked gelatin on the tuna and mayo mixture. Pour mixture into a brain mold. You can buy one at bakery items or seasonal stores. Chill for 1 hour.

Unmold by turning the mold upside down then gently pop out the brain onto a platter with a bed of lettuce. You can use your hidden sculpting skills to make the tuna even look like a brain.

Tuna Witch Fingers

Slice tuna fillets to form finger-shaped pieces. Fry on your usual way. Paint the pointed end or "nail portion" by using some red food coloring and brush on with a small kitchen brush. If you have a red decorator gel, squeeze gel onto the tip of the tuna slices to form nails.

Halloween Tuna Eyeballs

Combine ground tuna, flour, cheese, some butter, pepper and salt. When the tuna mixture is enough to hold together, shape into eyeball-sized balls. Flatten each ball just a little and press pimiento-stuffed green olive in the center. Arrange in a way the "eye" (pimento) is facing outward. Mold tuna meat around the olive, and bake for 10 minutes.

Tuna Monstrous Sandwiches

In this recipe, use white tuna fish that is packed in water. Cut tuna into small pieces then mix with celery, mayonnaise, lemon juice and seasonings. Cut the bread slices in the shape of ghosts. Spread tuna mixture onto the bread to form sandwiches. Use raisins to make the eyes and mouth.

Celebrating Halloween doesn't really need to be expensive. Creepy, maybe, but these Halloween recipes are only designed to put smiles and fun around. I hope the Halloween tuna ideas will help to get you started in creating memorable Halloween traditions. You may find it inflexible to mingle tuna with your other usual Halloween dishes, but the whole sense of chaotic flavors running on your palate could add up to the whole "scary" scheme. After all its Halloween night.

Happy Halloween!

Like her dynamic cutlery, Rachael Ray cookware first enchants the eye before you even realize how well you can cook with it. The handsome charcoal-gray, hard-anodized pots and pans feature shiny stainless-steel handles wrapped with neon-orange silicone grips that practically glow with the kinetic energy of this celebrity chef. It'll come as no surprise that orange is Ray's favorite color. A smile is practically guaranteed each time you pull one of these pans out of the cupboard or see them hanging by your stove. As for cooking, hard-anodized aluminum heats quickly and evenly, resists scratching, and is incredibly durable. The interior nonstick finish allows food to slide right off.

Every piece is oven-safe to 400 degrees F, so you can start a dish on the stovetop and finish it with a hot bake-through. For the best care, washing the nonstick cookware by hand is recommended. An excellent gift, the set is covered by a lifetime limited warranty against defects. --Ann Bieri

Importance of Buying Good Quality Cookware Set

Cookware has been one of the most important utensils in every household. For some, buying good quality cookware means spending much money. But if you are the type of person who has passion in cooking and food preparation, you might consider buying cookware seriously.

Cookware Sets

You would want to spend time looking for good cookware that is long lasting and has all the features you have in mind.

Cookware Sets

In choosing a cookware, the first thing that you should consider is the material from which it is made of. The most popular choice is one that is made of stainless steel since it is durable. It can resist wear and tear and it is also cheaper. However, this material has been criticized by some as hazardous to health due to its metals component like nickel, iron and chromium.

Other types of material used in making cookware are ceramic, enamel, and glass. These materials are heat resistant and are easier to clean. Newer models are made of plastic material that can be used in cooking and storing. Unlike other metals, plastic cookware is safe to be used in microwave ovens. This cookware is also lightweight and cannot be broken like the glass one.

In cleaning stainless cookware, use soap and water or warm ammonia and water solution. Rinse it with clean water then have it dried thoroughly to prevent having spots on it. Do not use cleaners such as chlorine and alcohol to maintain the good look of your cookware. Those made of cast iron are usually coated with heated unsalted fat or porcelain to avoid rusting.

Some types of cookware are made of copper and are more expensive than the stainless. A stainless type with copper bottom is also available and is cheaper than the all-copper type. The bottom of this type gets heated faster and chances are the food easily gets burned at the bottom.

When buying cookware, it is important that it is able to distribute heat evenly so that the food will be evenly cooked without some parts getting burned. Food cooked in those made of aluminum, copper, and cast iron tends to absorb the metal content of these materials. Stainless steel cookware is still the most recommended since it is affordable, easier to clean and has less reaction to food.

You should bear in mind that the ideal cookware is based on your preferences and how it suits your cooking and food habits. Enjoy cooking with your new cookware set!

Is Celebrity Cookware Worth Buying?

If there's one question that I get asked almost more than any other, it's a question about celebrity cookware. People want to know if this stuff is worth purchasing and it's very hard to answer this question for a number of reasons.

Cookware Sets

First off, what exactly am I talking about by celebrity cookware? Well, basically I'm talking about any kind of cookware that is produced by a television personality or television chef of any kind. You know the people that I'm talking about, all those cooking shows on television that we all love to watch that are produced by people like:

Cookware Sets

- Rachel Ray
- Martha Stewart
- Jamie Oliver
- Emeril

I'm a big fan of every one of those celebrities...I watch their tv shows whenever I can. Over time, however, you sort of get to notice a pattern that they all fall into. I call this the marketing trap. Basically they start out with the television show, and it becomes wildly popular and their names become an instantly recognizable trademark.

Next, they attempt to cash in on their new fame, usually by creating a cookbook or something small that's easy to produce and easy to manufacture. Of course, the cookbook is usually an instant success which causes them to release another cookbook which is also usually a success...

And then they continue to grow their marketing from there, usually by introducing their own line of celebrity cookware with their name on it. This stuff usually looks absolutely amazing, and that's the trick.

But the fact of the matter remains that these people don't have any experience manufacturing cookware, or anything else that's as complicated as these types of things. Sure a cookbook is easy, but a 12 piece cooking set? They usually team up with a company of some sort who are responsible for actually manufacturing the stuff.

The problem is, in order for the margins to work out they really have to produce questionable products that are as cheap to produce as possible because otherwise the limited production runs won't pay for themselves, no matter how much free advertising they get on the celebrities television show.

Subsequently, this stuff is usually much cheaper than high-quality dishware.

The bottom line is; this stuff will usually hold up pretty well for about a year, or maybe two years at the most and then it starts to warp and breakdown in various different ways, almost always, no matter who the celebrity chef is.

Take my advice and steer clear of this stuff if at all possible. Spend a few extra dollars for some high-quality stuff that will last for years to come.

Stainless Steel Waterless Cookware - A Lifetime of Value

Over a million synthetic pots and pans are tossed in landfills every year. These nonstick wonders don't seem to last very long, 3 to 5 years is common. If you're re-investing in new cookware, consider replacing your Teflon with a far more cost-effective solution. Consider the value of Stainless Steel Waterless cookware.

Cookware Sets

The Investment

Cookware Sets

Comparably priced nonstick stainless steel waterless cookware (between 0 and 0) will save some serious coin over the years. These quality pots and pans are warranted to last for your lifetime.

The Bargain

Durability is a good measure of value. If cookware doesn't last, it's no bargain. Too, it's best to cook on a nonstick surface free of toxicity. Teflon fuming, peeling and erosion represent a serious health hazard as does leaching from soft metal cooking surfaces like copper, aluminum, cast iron and others.

Stainless steel waterless utensils confidently provide the ideal nonstick cooking surface free of toxic risk or continuous 'seasoning' to manage rust, "...the closest thing we have to the ideal chemically inert but thermally responsive pan" says Harold McGee in On Food and Cooking: the Science and Lore of the Kitchen: Scribner 2004, page 791. (Search 'Waterless Cookware: Hype or the Real Thing' for more on McGee).

The Bonus

Imagine the value of having a lifetime to explore and enjoy the most hygienic, responsive, food-friendly, cook-friendly, earth-friendly and health-friendly set of pots and pans you can own. Yes, 'friendly' because cooks, food and cookware are best served when engaged in a supportive relationship, one of consistent service and celebration, learning and triumph.

Included in this friendship are family, friends and another very important member to be invited, seated and served at the dining table, one of robust taste and aroma, of natural nutrients and energy, of wholesome vitality and healing health. There's no substitute for nature's honest foods, no 'fortified' material worthy of the name 'whole food' (search 'waterless cookware, the healthy choice').

The Value

It's no secret that much of today's food has evolved for the sake of convenience and not nutrition. The composition and function of modern cookware has evolved as well, and not for the better. For example, synthetic or ceramic coatings on the inside and colorful enameled coatings on the outside don't reflect cookware value, good health or good sense. Coatings are cosmetic at best, 'cover-ups' applied to lesser grades of steel used in fabrication. Look below the skin for a lifetime of value.

Let's revisit the purpose of food (and the cookware that cooks it) to more fully appreciate the value of quality stainless steel waterless cookware:

Cooking is actually a moment of truth, a culmination of nature's food cycle, a moment when the vital cache of earth's nutrient goodness is tastefully enhanced or sadly wasted. A pot or pan is more than an appliance to heat processed food material or boil away nature's precious minerals, vitamins, enzymes and antioxidants. Real food deserves better. There's simply more to the enriching soils of organic vegetables and free-range meats, more to engage the palate, the nose, the eyes, more to savor and certainly more to revitalize and re-energize. We are, after all, only as healthy as the health of that which we eat. To that end, pots and pans are a huge contributor to the nutritional and savory fate of foods. Much can be gained or lost in the simple act of cooking.

Stainless steel waterless cookware honors and retains the goodness of nature's honest efforts. As with good friends or marriage or other maturing relationships, a partnership with food and cooking takes time to appreciate and thrive. It helps to have cookware that's reliable, steady, dependable, trusted, capable of ideal cooking conditions simply and easily mastered. Cooking is life long. We might as well mature a friendship with cookware durable and worthy enough to nurture and sustain this kind of relationship.

The Return on Investment

Your grandma likely used similar pots and pans way back when. Stainless Steel cookware isn't new, but grandma's originals lacked many of today's Waterless features:

- Multi-ply stainless steel fabrication, 5-, 7-, or 9-ply 18/10 chromium/nickel construction for quality

- Capsulated heat-conductive elements (copper, aluminum, etc.) for unparalleled low-heat cooking

- Steam Control covers to fully preserve and retain nutritious vitamins, minerals, enzymes and antioxidants

- Thermally responsive, efficient utensils to cook faster, safer, more evenly and economically

These and many other improvements now render today's waterless utensil capable of cooking food the way it was meant to be cooked, the way Mother Nature intended her vegetables and meats to be served, fully appreciated, fully valued, fully themselves. To serve anything less isn't a bargain, it's a wasted opportunity for all concerned, especially food.

When real food is experienced (cooked as Mother Nature intended), one tends to develop an honest taste and firm loyalty. My acquired personal preference of 30 years as family cook, and my business specialty, is Stainless Steel Waterless pots and pans. Being in the business I'm confident I speak for others in this specialty when I share this fact: not a day goes by without hearing from folks looking to replace a pot handle or lid knob on their cookware. These little attachments, durable as they are, eventually wear out. Here's a sample of today's customer requests from ChoiceCookery's on-line Contact Us page:

"I have a set of Flavor-Seal by Cory cookware that I bought in 1963. I need to replace the handles on the large fry pan. Are they available?"

"My mom has a set of Miracle Maid pans she got when she was married. She loves them, but the electric fry pan has a short in the cord and we would like to get a new cord. Can you help us?"

"I need to replace the vented knobs on my Royal Queen waterless cookware. I have had it for 27 years and I love it but over time the knobs have begun to lose their ability to seal the moisture in. Could you give me information about how to order? Thank you in advance."

"I can't find Nutri-Seal anywhere. Can you help me? I need a new handle on my 8qt stock pot."

"I'd like to order a vent knob for my set, Maxam KT17. It has been thirty years since I brought them home, lots of cooking mishaps along the way and the handle on my roaster finally broke. Please call me."

We called. And yes, all these cooks were relieved to know replacements are still available.

1) Trust a brand that's here to stay. Maxam, the brand we represent, has been innovating and manufacturing stainless steel waterless cookware for over 60 years.

2) For businesses like ours, there's a beautiful irony here. Unlike disposable bargain cookware, our pots and pans last a lifetime. Our customers return of course, usually to purchase a set of cookware for their grown children or a grandchild's wedding, maybe a handle or knob for themselves (a replacement easily attached, adding another 30 years of cookware service and value). These folks tend to share the good news with family and friends. Too, they're experiencing a cookware partnership they are not about to give up! Loyalty is honestly earned and yes, priceless.

The Bottom Line

Look beyond 3-to-5 years. Invest in cookware that matures your relationship with food and cooking. For me, it's about two hats I wear and a bond that ties them together, a hat I experience everyday as family cook and a friendship with customers embracing the simple joys and lifelong value of waterless pots and pans.

Your friendship with food and cooking simply can't be explored, experienced and enjoyed using cookware less capable than stainless steel waterless pots and pans. Bargain prices and cosmetic glitz just can't appreciate in value. Consider cookware you'll never have to (or want to) replace. Real value keeps giving for your lifetime, but that's just our warranty. Cook healthy, eat honestly, and thrive.
